Columbus, OH. Days4-5.

Well, I am currently sitting at one of my new favorite places (right up there with the home of Greg Pond, Kelly’s pops whose home we affectionately dubbed “the Pond”) my Aunt Deb’s back porch. It has a brick floor and screen windows as its walls. My aunt and I share the same intrigue for “old junk” as she puts it and “personality” as I put it. This place is filled with refreshing personality; tree stumps as side tables, vintage tables and chairs, green plants in the corner, a full garden sitting outside and flocks of birds hanging out at the bird feeders. It has been a great place to be this week both for the atmosphere and the people. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

As far as music has been going, this weekend has been somewhat uneventful. I had Saturday off which was spent with family and I was only able to find one open mic on a Sunday night and it was in the small town of Granville, planted in the north-eastern exterior of Columbus about a half-hour drive away. Typically, I have called the open mics in advance to ensure that I have the correct details. I think that in the high hopes that this one shot of a Sunday night open mic would work out, I neglected making the call. I, of course, regretted that decision when I found myself roaming the streets (orrr street) of Granville, Ohio, searching for the now non-existent Nona Restaurant & Bar. I wonder if the smallness of the town explained all of the awkward stares I felt I was receiving by the Granvillians. It was weird.

All that to say, I have had the last two nights off and am getting back into it tonight by visiting the Scarlet & Grey Cafe, down by OSU’s campus. Then, tomorrow, hoping to visit two in one night: Taj Mahal, an underground hipster type open mic and Ruby Tuesday, that is not the chain restaurant. Stay posted for final thoughts on my trip!

Columbus, OH. Day2.

Loving Columbus. Last night was day 2 of my experimental Columbus OH Open Mic tour and I spent it at Fats Bar & Billiards. It was a small crowd but a fantastic one. The experience was very encouraging and one that I am very grateful to have and, already, I have met such great people and impressive musicians. It’s so exciting to be dropping in on such a thriving music community and to be so welcomed!

Because of the people I’ve met, the trip naturally has shifted away from being so business oriented and has refined itself into something of much more value. It really has come down to the simplicity of loving music and loving people; something that as a band we have talked about a lot. Music builds great community and I think great community can lend itself to providing better music. In this way, I see music and community as very intertwined with each other. To see them come together in different ways throughout Columbus has been very exciting and makes me remember and appreciate my home music community very much. (holla atchya City Folk!) I greatly look forward to returning to this city and introducing my close music family to the community I’ve met here.

My trip has also become less about paying for my trip. Obviously, I’d still love to drive out of here with the same amount of money I had driving in. But, I think that the relationships I am building far outweigh the money. In short, I have realized that I’d rather make a lasting relationship than sell a CD.

That being said, I’ve also realized that the success of my trip cannot be determined until long after I’ve left Columbus. If I leave this city on Wednesday and fail to follow up and remain invested in these relationships then this trip would be a waste. In other words, I think the success of my trip will be reliant on what I do after I leave the city; how I follow up. So patience and consistency are key. I’m having a great time meeting fantastic people but I hope that I can continue building these relationships; not just as a musician helping a musician but as a friend helping a friend.

Tonight I head off to Java Central Coffee. I hear that it is a real folksy place and usually a very packed listening space so I’m very much looking forward to playing tonight and continuing to meet cool people. Also, thanks to my Aunt Deb, I’ve learned of a folk festival this weekend in Columbus! Tomorrow, I am hoping to spend a lot of time there and see what happens!

As a final thought, one reason I love this more business side of music is the same reason I love songwriting: there are no absolute rules to it, only tools you can choose to use or not. That constant need for creative freedom in the process allows for continuous challenges and natural growth. That being said, it’s good to get my thoughts out! Thanks for reading!

Columbus, OH. Day1.

Well I’m officially signed up for the first open mic of my Columbus Open Mic Tour. I’m at Woodlands Tavern. It’s a pretty hopping place! It feels great to actually be doing this but a four and a half hour drive does get long and boring by myself so enjoy this video…

Columbus, OH

Tomorrow, I fly solo and head out to the great city and home of the Buckeyes, Columbus, OH. This is the first experimental trip of the summer. The idea is that if I take a week and spend just about every night at a different open mic at bars, coffee shops etc. I will be able to make some solid connections in the city and start to get our music out there in the city.

Though, I am very familiar with the open mic scene, especially with my experience running Michigan Homegrown Open Mic in 2008 to 2010, I have never done something like this. Therefore, this Columbus trip is seen as an experiment. If it goes well, I will most likely do the same in other cities throughout the summer in addition to our busy summer touring schedule. And by “going well”, I mean accomplishing three goals:

1. Make good connections in the Columbus music scene. I hope to meet local musicians and venues in hopes of making the city much easier to book in the future.

2. Start to spread our music to new ears in Columbus. I hope to play for new ears and hopefully win them over. This will ideally make it easier to bring in more people to local shows when we come back as a fuller band.

3. I hope that with spending a week in one city, I can sell enough merch to pay for my trip. Typically, people don’t expect to purchase much at an open mic and most artists dont expect to sell much but I am taking my chances and hopefully will be able to pay for my trip.

So these are my goals, here is my schedule (subject to change):

May 2 – Woodlands Tavern
May 3 – Fats Bar and Billiard
May 4 – Java Central Coffee
May 6 – Nona Restaurant and Bar
May 7 – Scarlet and Grey Cafe
May 8 – Ruby Tuesday (not the chain)

How you can help:

Come on out to one if you’re in the area. Bring friends OR tell your friends in the Columbus area. Spread the word!

I’ll update everyone on how it goes! Stay tuned!

Rob Germeroth.

Rob has been a part of our band as our drummer for about 9 months.  However for about 4 of those months was our extended break.  So for the 5 months that he has been actively performing with us we have had the great honor and opportunity to get to know him as a musician and person.

When Mike Kates, our previous drummer who has remained an awesome friend, announced that he would have to step down as our percussionist due to his prior commitments, my eyes popped out in a search of a new drummer.  As I shuffled through our various connections and options, I thought of Rob Germeroth, a folksy looking feller I knew from a small group at our Church.  I had seen him on a regular basis and knew little about him as a musician.  What I did know, I liked.  I knew that he played drums, that he had a good taste in music and that he dressed like a folkster.  It was enough for me to initiate and talk with him about possibly joining our group.  We had met for lunch and discussed our similar visions for the music we create.   He seemed to be a great fit.  Eventually, Kim Wren somehow had heard him play and was more than impressed.  She talked with me and shared that she thought that he would be a fantastic addition to our band.  Indeed he is.

I have thoroughly enjoyed having Rob be a part of our group and I know everyone else has appreciated him greatly as well.  He certainly is not a man of many words but he is sure to make his replies thoughtful and/or quirky.  He is a very calm and consistent person and for that I appreciate him both as a musician and human.  He has a very tasteful and intentional technique that adds to our music in many ways.  I love the creativity that he shares with our music.  Many times, it is just a little thing that he does that adds so much to the song.  He is a very intentional and creative and humorous person.  Again, I am very grateful for the opportunity to share the stage with Rob Germeroth.

…and he has a great mustache.

Kelly Pond.

For as much of a hard time that I give Kelly Pond both off and on stage, my appreciation for her is incredibly great for many different reasons.  Over the four (ish) years that we have known and played music together she has become one of my greatest friends.  She is like a sister.

The first time that I remember putting a face to the name Kelly Pond it was at my sister’s wedding.  Kelly and my brother-in-law had played music together at Michigan State and she was invited to play her violin at their wedding.  Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to meet at the wedding.  Instead, we officially met about a week later at a college group event.  Not knowing her well, I invited her to join me and some friends to an open mic at Dagwoods in Lansing.  She came and left pretty quickly due to the smoke-polluted air.  Knowing her now, I’m sure she took her inhaler out as soon as she exited the building.

In January of 2008, I took over an open mic in Lansing called Michigan Homegrown Music.  Throughout the two years that I was heavily involved a unique and close-knit community emerged from the laid-back open mic.  Kelly fortunately quickly became a part of this community.  It was through our mutual involvement in this open mic that led to us playing music in her living room.  We quickly decided two things: 1. That our voices don’t sound good together. 2. That violin might not be the best fit for my songs.  It seems that we were wrong on both accounts. We recorded our first E.P. and started playing a collection of awkward shows.  This has grown into what our music is today.

I am incredibly blessed to have had such a fantastic musician and friend join me for these four years.  Certainly, our music would be very different if Kelly had never been involved.  We’ve played some of the best shows and the worst shows together – we both can attest to that.  Both on and off stage, she has an impressive understanding of music and an incredibly joyful and people-oriented spirit.  If you’ve met her, I’m sure you haven’t forgotten her.  Needless to say, I greatly look forward to playing music with her for a long time.   Thank you Kelly “freakin’” Pond!
